This Annual Report is prepared with the aim of providing a comprehensive overview of the developments and challenges faced by freedom of expression, especially press freedom in Indonesia throughout 2024. As a fundamental pillar of democracy, the press plays a vital role in maintaining transparency, accountability, and justice in the life of the nation and state.
Throughout 2024, LBH Pers has provided legal assistance to 112 complainants with the majority of complaints being employment issues and cases of attacks on freedom of expression. Meanwhile, for monitoring press incidents, LBH Pers recorded at least 67 incidents with a total of around 96 victims, individuals, organizations, or media.
Press freedom in Indonesia has experienced various dynamics that affect the quality of information reaching the public. There have been various important achievements that deserve to be appreciated, but also challenges that continue to test the resilience of the press in carrying out its duties freely and independently. From increasing threats to journalists, to various regulations that often limit the press’s space for movement, this report will review in depth various aspects that touch on freedom of expression and press freedom.
This report not only aims to document facts and events, but also to encourage critical reflection on the importance of freedom of expression and freedom of the press as part of inalienable human rights. We hope that this report can be a useful source of information for policy makers, civil society, and all parties who care about the development of democracy and freedom of expression.
Finally, we hope that this report can provide broader insight into the conditions of freedom of expression and freedom of the press in the country and become a driving force for efforts to maintain and fight for freedom of the press in the future.
Thank you for your attention and support.
Yours sincerely,
Ade Wahyudin
Excecutive Director LBH Pers
